NICOD

WILLIAM (1 July 1904 - 1947)

Not married

Uncle Bill

William was born with severe disabilities, one side of his body being smaller than the other and wore especially made shoes, one built up. He was also born with cardiac trouble. It seems his health was a constant worry to his father and he was never expected to live to a great age.

He went to Beacontree Heath school, Dagenham, as did his brother and sisters. He went to work for some charity and was a caretaker at the charity's house in Romford. They taught him to repair boots and shoes. He was an ARP warden during the war. He was to have an operation (for what I don't know) but was too ill and died in Old Church Hospital. (The above was told to me by Aunt Violet, William's sister.)

I remember my Uncle Bill visiting us when we lived at Dagenham. He was a very tall man 6ft 4ins (I think) he used to fill the door-frame. When he visited he would always bring tea and sugar etc. which he had saved from his rations, to help-out mum. I recall one visit in particular as he brought us children a huge box of sweets, they were pretty colours, made of sugar and had soft centres. (Joyce)
