John was a Ferryman at Bill Quay.
He died by drowning in the River Tyne around Christmas time.
His son Thomas also lost his life in the same way.

She was daughter of John Maughan a moulder at Walker Iron Foundary
and Hannah Maughan formerly Harle.

A headstone at a family plot in Heworth Churchyard
had the following inscription:

JOHN SIMM drowned at Pelaw Main 24.12.1857 age 62.
THOMAS ARKLE SIMM son of ab. was also drowned
at Pelaw Main 21.12.1872 age 38.
ELIZABETH CHERRY sister in law d. 27.1.1877 age 64.
JAMES SIMM son of ab.d. 14.6.1879 age 40.
CATHERINE wf. of ab. JOHN SIMM d. 22.1.1880 age 80.


WORT

MARGARET SIMM (nee Maughan)

In 1880 Margaret was the proprietor of a
small Marine Merchant store in Pelaw Main.
She had a second marriage aged 34 on Nov. 5th 1879 to Henry Wort
in the parish church of All Saints, Newcastle upon Tyne.
He gave his age as 40 - a widower
Henry died of a (heart attack?) on December 5th 1892 aged 56 years
which places his date of birth as 1836. He was a
trimmer on the coal ships of the Tyne at Bill Quay/Pelaw Main.
